Trauma Healing for PMDD: How Family Constellations Can Help Break the Cycle

If you find yourself spiraling every month — emotionally overwhelmed, misunderstood, and somehow carrying the weight of the world — you’re not imagining it. And you’re certainly not alone.

For many women, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) isn’t just about hormones. It’s about the nervous system, stress physiology, and sometimes… emotional burdens that didn’t even start with us.

As a naturopath specialising in PMDD and trauma-informed healing, I see this often: women who eat well, take supplements, go to therapy — and still feel stuck in the same emotional cycle. That’s often a sign that the root isn’t just physical. It may be ancestral.

This is where Family Constellations for PMDD offers something profoundly different.

What Are Family Constellations?

Family Constellations is a therapeutic process that helps you uncover and release inherited emotional patterns — the kind that show up as anxiety, rage, self-sabotage, or relational struggles, especially around your luteal phase.

Unlike talk therapy, it isn’t about rehashing stories or blaming anyone. It’s about understanding what your body and emotional system may still be carrying — even if it’s not yours to carry.

Many women with PMDD are highly sensitive, intuitive, and deeply affected by their environment. That sensitivity is not a weakness — but it often means you’re absorbing more than your fair share, consciously or not.

Why Is Family Constellation Work So Powerful for PMDD?

PMDD often activates old emotional wounds — not just personal ones, but generational ones too.

If your symptoms feel like they have a life of their own — recurring rage, panic, or despair that doesn’t make sense — it may be a sign you’re holding something ancestral.

Through Family Constellations, we gently explore the unconscious patterns you may be living out — and begin to release them.

Benefits can include:

  • Breaking cycles of shame, rage, or emotional overwhelm

  • Shifting inherited grief, trauma, or emotional enmeshment

  • Greater emotional resilience during your cycle

  • Feeling more grounded in your body and more like yourself

"It felt like something finally let go — and for the first time, I wasn’t dreading my next period."
— Client feedback after a PMDD-focused Family Constellation session

What Happens in a Session?

Sessions can be held online or in-person (in Ubud, Bali), and are available as part of my PMDD Transformation Journey or as standalone 1:1 appointments.

You don’t need to involve your family, and you don’t need to have the full story. All you need is:

  • Yourself

  • A blank piece of paper

  • A pair of scissors

  • A pen

We’ll begin with an issue you’re facing — emotional, physical, relational, or ancestral — and let the deeper pattern emerge gently and intuitively.

Sessions last 60–90 minutes, and you’ll be guided at your own pace. You don’t have to explain everything. In fact, I strongly recommend not journaling or talking about the session for three days afterwards — just let the shift settle.

What Can This Help With?

Emotional Symptoms of PMDD:

  • Rage or panic that seems out of proportion

  • Sudden waves of sadness, hopelessness, or detachment

  • Feeling like your body is hijacked by emotions

  • Ongoing shame, self-doubt, or guilt

Relationship Struggles:

  • Reactivity in relationships, especially before your period

  • Feeling emotionally triggered by loved ones

  • Repeating painful dynamics in love or family life

  • A sense of obligation or emotional loyalty that isn’t yours

Deeper Healing Needs:

  • Unresolved grief, trauma, or estrangement in the family line

  • Emotional patterns that haven’t shifted despite years of therapy

  • A quiet sense that something deeper is at play — and ready to move

But Is There Any Science Behind It?

Yes — while Family Constellations may sound esoteric, there’s growing scientific support behind its principles:

🧬 Epigenetics shows that trauma can be passed down through generations — influencing emotional responses, stress tolerance, and even hormone sensitivity.

🧠 Neuroplasticity proves that emotional and behavioural patterns can be rewired — which is crucial for women with PMDD who feel stuck in loops of reactivity.

🔄 Morphic resonance, as explored by biologist Rupert Sheldrake, proposes that we’re linked to family energy fields that carry memory and emotion — whether we’re conscious of it or not.

So while this isn’t “science in a lab coat,” it aligns with what we see in both clinical practice and lived experience: the body carries stories — and it’s possible to let them go.

My Journey with This Work

I stumbled into my first Family Constellation session over 15 years ago. I had no idea what to expect — I just knew something needed to shift. And it did.

Years later, when I was facing my own PMDD, trauma, and emotional burnout, I returned to this work with new eyes. It reached places that years of talk therapy never could.

Now, it’s one of the most profound tools I offer women who feel emotionally “possessed” by PMDD — and are ready for something deeper.

Is This for You?

Family Constellations may be right if:

  • You feel emotionally overwhelmed before your period

  • You’ve tried naturopathy, therapy, or medication — but something’s still missing

  • You experience recurring guilt, shame, or sadness without a clear cause

  • Your relationships feel strained around your cycle

  • You have a sense that you’re carrying more than just your own story

If any of this resonates, you’re not broken — you’re carrying something that’s ready to shift.
